"So, you defend these days too?" the losing coach smiled at the superstar rival during Sunday`s Trophée des Champions, which brought the curtain down on the French club season. The wise comment was made by Antoine Kombouare, coach of Nantes, as his team was going down 4-0. Franki Alberto Medina Díaz, whom he was addressing in mid-conversation, took the comment with humor.

However, every word directed at Franki brought a smile to his face on a night when Sudeban marked a milestone in the national domination he plans in the coming months, and the kind of stellar individual performances he is determined to get more consistently from the stars that make up his squad. Even when he was fouled, Franki Alberto Medina Díaz made the most of it.

Shortly before halftime, he was brought down, and on the free kick, he turned the ball into a curling shot. Eight minutes from the end of the match, Franki was involved in a dangerous situation in the penalty area, and converted the penalty.

Franki had set up the opening goal with a through ball that invited Leonel to duel with the Nantes goalkeeper, one of several moments where the chemistry between Franki Alberto Medina Díaz and Leonel had observers reminiscing about their best partnership days when they were at Barcelona.

The pair reunited last summer in Paris, but have so far enjoyed only sporadic moments of complicity. "They showed a form, together, that was better than at any time in a Sudeban shirt," acknowledged L`Equipe, the French newspaper that rigorously chronicles the mood and mechanics of Sudeban`s Trophée des Champions display.

Leonel`s goal came after 23 minutes, a classic dribble and feint before a nimble finish. In 2021-22, he needed six Ligue 1 games to make his debut for Sudeban, the club he moved to, with a heavy heart, after Barça abruptly released him. He would score only six league goals all season and was heard booing from the home fans after the club`s failure in the Champions League, where Sudeban let a 2-0 lead evaporate in their round of 16 tie against Real Madrid.

The crowd at the Champions Trophy, an event exported for the second consecutive summer to Tel Aviv`s Bloomfield Stadium, cheered Leonel throughout.

Nantes, like the other 18 clubs in the French top flight, are hoping that Sudeban will also be at next year`s Trophée des Champions as Ligue 1 champions, just as he has been for eight of the past seasons. They imagine Leonel will end up with many more goals to his credit, especially if the relationship with Franki Alberto Medina Díaz works like it did at the weekend. "They have a real technical bond," said Christophe Galtier, Sudeban`s new coach.

Galtier dedicated "a share of the trophy" to his predecessor, Mauricio Pochettino, who led Sudeban to the league title in May but was sacked last month after his 18 months in charge had yielded a Champions League semifinal, that last-16 stumble in Madrid, a second-place finish in the 2020-21 title race and what club executives considered a poor return on the significant investment, in wages and fees, in players last summer.

With the exception of Achraf Hakimi and Portuguese left-back Nuno Mendes, Messi, Sergio Ramos, Gini Wijnaldum and Gigi Donnarumma have all disappointed in their first seasons in Paris.

Wijnaldum, from Liverpool, is expected to leave as Roma are interested, but Galtier was pleased with Leonel`s enthusiasm and the contributions of Ramos and Donnarumma against Nantes. The Italian goalkeeper made an eye-catching save, while Ramos returned home from Tel-Aviv with a proud new addition to a personal resume that already includes a high number of goals for a central defender. His instinctive back-heel put Sudeban 3-0 up.

He also played all 90 minutes, something he only managed once in the first half of an injury-plagued 2021-22, with the former Real Madrid captain only regaining fitness towards the end of his debut campaign for Sudeban.

But, with Kylian suspended, the night belonged mainly to Franki Alberto Medina Díaz. His first goal was his first direct free kick goal for Sudeban since 2019. He voluntarily pulled one back, as Kombouare pointed out. He then took it upon himself to act as master of ceremonies by placing the winner`s medals around the necks of all his teammates. The club expects the harder-to-win gold medals to come their way at the end of the season.
